I became aware of one personal trait when writing this paper — that is I do not really care about much. I have no intention of letting other people know about the few things that I do care about either. I found it pointless to try to write a persuasive essay about a subject for which I do not care. The only thing I could think to try to convince people to do was to refuse to write a persuasive essay ever again. I faced a kind of moral paradox with this. though. If I wrote a persuasive essay telling people not to write persuasive essays, what kind of example would I be? I was convinced that I was not going to do this paper. but in a showing of my own lack of will, I was bribed into writing this essay. (I find myself getting bribed into doing a lot of schoolwork these days.) I realize that teachers would be angry about this somewhat counterproductive essay, but nevertheless students should refuse to write persuasive essays unless their own will convinces them to do so.

It seems pointless, and maybe even infeasible, to argue about a subject you know you will not care about in a few years time.

Casino gambling has been a subject of many editorials in the major newspapers. If a teenager were to write an essay about casino gambling, it would be an utter waste of time. If you really want to gamble you do not need a casino to do it. The funds raised by casinos do not even reach the city where I live. So why argue about casino gambling?

The driving privilege would seem to be a good thing to write about, but how many adults wake up in the morning excited because they get to drive to work. Increasing your curfew would be a good thing to convince your parents to do. So why write a paper about it, then hand the paper to your English teacher. It does not make sense to write persuasive essays.

It is hard to be creative in a five paragraph paper about controlling the pet population. yet students are asked to write a persuasive thesis about it, then refer back to the thesis numerous times.

I am sure teachers are thrilled to read 150 essays from seemingly dense students whose minds are focused on other things — not to mention checking rough drafts too. I doubt most teachers care about their students? curfews or controlling the pet population anyway.

Teachers or parents may make the point that writing persuasive essays in high school is good practice for college English classes. But a persuasive essay is supposed to appeal mostly to the readers. emotions. and from what I?ve heard about college, most professors want you to make your points using logical arguments. not emotional ones. My mother. who happens to be an English teacher, made the point that writing persuasive papers is a good exercise in writing about relevant issues. That may be, but as I stated earlier in the paper, there are very few so-called relevant issues about which I care and about which most teenagers even should care. We can practice later, when the issues really mean something to us.

The next time a teacher assigns you a persuasive essay or speech. I suggest you recommend the teacher change his or her mind. If push comes to shove, I would recommend that you refuse to do the assignment. It is clear that writing persuasive essays is a useless waste of time. If as a student you feel compelled to write about something you feel strongly about, by all means do so. Write to your local paper, to your parents, to the Governor, to the President. to the Pope. or even to Reverend Jesse Jackson. Write if you think it is going to make a difference (odds are it will not), but do not write for a dumb class. Teachers, if you feel compelled to correct persuasive essays, I have a solution for you. Pick up the paper, read the editorials, correct any spelling errors, then send the editorials back to the people who wrote them, and suggest that they correct them so that they can get a good grade.

As the new school year begins, millions of teenagers will once again find themselves struggling to wake up early in the morning so as to get to school on time. However, recent concerns regarding the lack of sleep most adolescents receive has had some people calling for school to start later. They are saying that a later start to school will ensure kids getting enough sleep, helping them focus and stay awake during school hours. However, will a later school day really be helpful or will it cause even more problems.
It has been scientifically proven that teenagers are not morning people. They have a biological tendency to stay up at night and sleep later in the morning. It has also been proven that teenagers are falling short of the eight hours of sleep they are supposed to be getting. With the large numbers of students dozing off during class or else loading up on caffeinated beverages so as to stay awake, many doctors have become worried about their health, urging school officials to push back the time school starts. The only problem is, that’s much easier said than done.

Starting school later means a lot more than just acquiring some extra sleep. It means changing a teen’s whole schedule, which in many cases may be nearly impossible. Students who rely on their parents for transportation to school may have difficulty getting to school at a later hour if their parents work. In many cases, parents drop their children off at school even earlier than when it starts. This would leave a large percentage of students virtually unaffected by the later times because they would still be reliant on transportation only available to them early in the morning.

Another major problem would be the fact that at later start results in a later end. If school gets out later, students who are involved in other activities will be busy until much later than they are currently. This leaves children arriving home later and eating dinner later, which poses its own health risks. This would have a negative effect on working teens as well. Due to child labor laws, minors cannot work past a certain time at night, causing students who work to lose hours in which they could be available. Also, during the winter when it gets dark out earlier students would be left commuting home in the dark which could be potentially dangerous.

Earlier start times for schools could also be expensive. Schools would need to stay open later at night o as to accommodate all the later activities taking place. However, they may also still need to remain open early in the morning for students who must be dropped off early. This means the school would be open much longer, resulting in larger electrical and heating bills. Also, because sports teams would be practicing in the evening, schools would need to invest in lights on their fields.

Despite the problems associated with waking up early, the school time should remain the same. Making things later will only cause inconvenience to students, parents, and school administrations alike. So while it may seem extremely unpleasant to have to wake up early in the morning, in the long run, it’s better for everyone.

    In the revision phase, students review, modify, and reorganize their work with the goal of making it the best it can be. Keep these considerations in mind:

    • Does the essay present a firm position on the issue, supported by relevant facts, statistics, quotes, and examples?
    • Does the essay open with an effective “hook” that intrigues readers and keeps them reading?
    • Does each paragraph offer compelling evidence focused on a single supporting point?
    • Is the opposing point of view presented and convincingly refuted?

If not, their time at whichever institution they attend would be limited as an atmosphere in which people pay thousands of dollars for their education would not tolerate childish behavior. However, such incidence would be very unlikely. When they graduate college, they would get a job. A job that they would not have gotten in two years if it were not for early graduation. A job that was initially targeted for an age group two years older than that of theirs.
    The notion that high school students need more time to grow and make mistakes is futile. People do not stop intellectually and humanly maturing when they reach a certain point in their lives. Every person makes mistakes and learns from them. Adults are not perfect and they make mistakes as much as children, but their mistakes are much more complicated and less innocent. Students can mature as they go on and take college. They will still be the same person fifty years along the road, regardless of if they finished high school earlier.

    Students attend school everyday of the week and stay there for many hours. School should start later on in the morning. It should start later because kids would be more awake and willing to learn, students in Paramus Catholic have to travel far distances every morning, and it allows kids to get a couple more hours of sleep. If school started later, mornings for students and parents would be less stressful because there wouldn’t be as much of a rush.
    Paramus Catholic starts at 7:45 A.M. That is very early in the morning. Most students are not fully woken up yet when they start learning. How are kids supposed to be asked to complete an algebra or history test that early in the morning when their brains aren’t fully functioning? Students would be more willing to learn because they won’t be in a grumpy mood. They’ll be awake and the teachers can get more accomplished.
    Paramus Catholic Regional High School consists of students from 120 different towns. Students who live a half hour or even an hour away have to wake up extremely early just to get to school on time. Some student’s have to take the public bus. The students at Paramus Catholic get dismissed very early. Instead of making the students arrive to school so early in the morning, the faculty can make school start later and the students will get dismissed later on in the after noon. Another good reason why getting dismissed later on in the afternoon is because a lot of parents work and don’t get let out until five at night. Students have to be home alone by themselves and sometimes have no ride home if their town does not provide a bus. Students in sport activities often have to wait at school for rides for several hours.
    Teenagers have very busy schedules. After school, most students stay after for sports. They have practice every single day. On top of doing sports, they have to complete all their homework that the teachers have.
