A critical essay is a critique or review of another work, usually one which is arts related (i.e. book, play, movie, painting). However, the critical essay is more than just a summary of the contents of the other work or your opinion of its value. The critical essay is an objective analysis of the work, examining both its positive and negative aspects. For instance, rather than trying to examine the movie "Star Wars", examine "The Use of Dialogue in Star Wars". In a critical essay, even this topic may be too broad. Narrow it further to a topic like how Yoda's odd dialogue contributes to the movie or how the voice of James Earl Jones adds to the character of Darth Vader.Title: An essay is an examination of a single topic. When a person says “critical” a person often thinks it has a negative meaning but this does not necessary hold true for a critical essay. A critical essay examines a topic, book, or article. It begins with a summary of the author’s point of view. An evaluation of the work is next which includes the facts and then an evaluation of the work should be done. It is important to state your position but also to consider other positions that might be taken. Remember the critical essay is informative as it emphasizes facts about the literary works. Always use evidence to prove your point of view. Write a well-organized and well-structured essay. The conclusion should restate the title and the author and assert the point of view of the writer.
Critical essay is a type of academic assignments that is often required at colleges and universities. Every student should know how to write this kind of written work, even thought it is not easy to do. No doubt that the process of writing such essays requires critical analysis skills and strong desire to reach success. It also assumes the writer to have erudition, skills of reasoning, originality of thought, and ease of presentation. The major task of critical essay is not just the reproduction of facts, but representation of impressions, thoughts and associations.
This type of essay is a review or a critique of some other work which usually relates to art. It can be a painting, play, book, film, etc. Critical essay is not just a summary of the contents, but a coherent and intelligent analysis of some other work in which the author gives his opinion of its value. It should be objective analysis, meaning that the author should examine both, negative and positive aspects of it. It is important for the author to state his position but also to consider other positions that might be taken. He should keep in mind that the critical essay is informative as it emphasizes facts about the literary works. The author is supposed to use evidence to prove his point of view and make his essay well-organized and well-structured.
The usual structure of critical essay consists of introduction, body and conclusion. The introduction introduces the topic, mentioning the name of the work and its author. In addition it shows authors position on the work and briefly determines the questions that will be discussed in the body.
The biggest part of the essay is its body, which contains information and evidence that supports authors position on the discussed topic. In this part the author of critical essay should develop his arguments using the facts that explain his position. He should also evaluate opinions of various experts and evaluate the work. There is a need of each statement of opinion to be followed with clear and relevant supporting evidence. The body should examine the viewpoints of other people on the topic; include statistic data, examples and comparisons if needed.
In the conclusion of the essay the author should restate his position and sum up all presented arguments and evidences that support his view point to make sure the reader understands him. He should also repeat the title and the author of the observed work in the conclusion.
Critical Essay Writing is about meticulous evaluation and judgment of chosen topics. Critical essays show the writer's attitude towards the evaluated material which may not necessarily mean opposition to existing points of view or direct disagreement with the author's thinking. Just like other types of essays, critical essays should be written in an unbiased and emotionally uncharged tone. They should objectively evaluate a chosen piece of literature, books or articles and demonstrate the writer's knowledge of the material, professional writing style and smooth presentation of facts.
To Write a professionally-looking critical essay, the writer should take into account the following points:
The Writer of Critical Essays should not be imposing yet authoritative in their writing style. Their personal opinion should be given up in favor of objective, unbiased evaluation. Each statement made by the writer should be corroborated by evidence and direct quotes from the criticized piece of literature. It is necessary to use proper style of referencing as required by the university. The text should be kept consistent throughout the essay. The final copy of a critical essay should be proofread and peer-reviewed. The facts and quotes need to be checked for consistency, the text needs to be checked for plagiarism.

The seven ‘essays’ by J.R.R. Tolkien assembled in this new paperback editionMore Complete collection of Tolkien’s essays, including two on Beowulf, which span three decades beginning six years before The Hobbit to five years after The Lord of the Rings.
The seven ‘essays’ by J.R.R. Tolkien assembled in this new paperback edition were with one exception delivered as general lectures on particular occasions; and while they mostly arose out of Tolkien’s work in medieval literature, they are accessible to all. Two of them are concerned with Beowulf, including the well-known lecture whose title is taken for this book, and one with Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, given in the University of Glasgow in 1953.
Also included in this volume is the lecture English and Welsh; the Valedictory Address to the University of Oxford in 1959; and a paper on Invented Languages delivered in 1931, with exemplification from poems in the Elvish tongues. Most famous of all is On Fairy-Stories, a discussion of the nature of fairy-tales and fantasy, which gives insight into Tolkien’s approach to the whole genre.
The pieces in this collection cover a period of nearly thirty years, beginning six years before the publication of The Hobbit, with a unique ‘academic’ lecture on his invention (calling it A Secret Vice) and concluding with his farewell to professorship, five years after the publication of The Lord of the Rings.

When Erin Gruwell was assigned a class full of students who were labeled "at risk," she had no idea the challenges she would face. Many would have balked at what seemed like an insurmountable, Sisyphean task. On their website, the Freedom Writers explain that "on our first day of school, we had only three things in common: we hated school, we hated our teacher, and we hated each other."
A novice teacher with big ideas and an even bigger heart, Gruwell refused to allow her students' lives to become self-fulfilling prophecies. By holding them to high standards and presenting them with countless opportunities, Gruwell gave these students a chance to overcome the limitations imposed on them by society. Gruwell encouraged her students to "do something different, something memorable, something powerful and humane."
In response to the overwhelming popularity and success of The Freedom Writers Diary. Erin Gruwell established the Freedom Writers Foundation which "promotes acceptance and innovative teaching methods in classrooms around the country." "Death of the Author"
Other sample model essays:
The title to the story "The Death of an Author," by Roland Barthes, suggests this story may be a fictional novel about the story of an author's death. Perhaps one might pick it up, and skim the foreword in hopes that beneath the cover of this book there would be a mystery, a story of detectives, eye-witnesses, clues, and a puzzle for the reader to solve. Before I read this story, the title "The Death of an Author" brought to my imagination the biography of a writer slowly drinking himself to death trying to finish the story of his life, but the author would be stuck and depressed because his life is not a story as it is boring and repetitive. I have read such short stories with similar titles by authors like Raymond Carver and others. I was surprised when I began to read "The Death of an Author" that a story with such a powerful title would be a wordy, whimper of a passage.
The author Roland Barthes is a brilliant writer, he is able to weave phrases and create new uses for verbs, nouns and adjectives. Though he is a brilliant writer I have to assume that he was not a very bright man or that he at least has very little common sense outside of the literary world. If he wrote in a more simple, to the point modern style I would have read the story, absorbed its content, and would not have given it a second look. The story could be summarized into 3 lines and thus reduce the amount of paper it is replicated on the amount of bandwidth required to transmit it, the space it takes, and the time it takes to read it. I came to this conclusion after reading "The Death of an Author" for the fourth or fifth time. I began to wonder why does this man write this way? What caused him to have so much distrust toward the critics? Those are the thoughts he was trying to persuade us not to think. Barthes wanted the author of the story to be no more than a name printed on the top or front of a book. Throughout the story "The Death of an Author," Barthes refers to the author as a scriptor in stating "Succeeding the Author, the scriptor no longer bears within him passions, humors, feelings, impressions but rather this immense dictionary from which he draws a writing that can know no halt." Barthes announces that a scriptor is superior to an author but they are the same. Now if a scriptor is superior to an author this passage drags on and on, never circulating around a single point. A scriptor does not try to make art of the two-hundred and fifty-five symbols placed in front of him. A scriptor arranges the symbols in an order that once decoded can be read back and can convey whatever message the scriptor recorded. Barthes reveals his knowledge of this in writing, "Once the author is removed, the claim to decipher a text becomes quite futile. To give a text an Author is to impose a limit on that text, to furnish it with a final signified, to close the writing."
I believe that Barthes is truly an author. His style of writing, as demonstrated in "The Death of an Author," is wordy and not clear and it invites self proclaimed critics and causal readers to try to read between the lines and to criticize Barthes himself. We rarely look at the writers who write in the magazine articles, newspapers, short stories that we read today. we read today magazine articles, newspapers, short stories. We do not read these items to gain the author's perspective on the subject. We read them for our enjoyment, for the knowledge contained in them, or maybe so that by reading the story it will become a part of us and we will become a part of it. It is lines like "Though the sway of the Author remains powerful it goes without saying that certain writers have long since attempted to loosen it." How come Barthes is not one of these authors? Has Barthes made this critic situation worse? (If this situation bothers anyone but Barthes). Barthes' writing has a great overtone of irony because everyone who reads this will criticize the author and not the story.
When we over-criticize a story or a book, we as people tend to go deeper than the words printed on the paper. We dream and try to imagine where these words came from and why are they here before me in this order. The

Art Critics are educated people who have educated guesses on what an artist's symbolism or inspiration was for an artwork. There are many periods and schools of thought for art and each critic has an original viewpoint of what the artist attempting to convey to an audience. An early critic of postmodernism is Lucy Lippard who reviewed art from the 1970's from a feminist perspective.
