Google has managed to become more than just a company. Google has become a lifestyle. The general population may argue, Google is just a search engine, or an email provider, but dig deeper and you will find Google is embedded all around us. They call it the Google Search campaign. Each ad in the campaign explores different aspects of people’s lives and how google has been a part of those experiences. One of their most watched commercials is their Google “Grads” ad. This ad focuses primarily on the high school career of students, from both the academic and social perspective. Google progresses from the first day of freshman year to graduation day. This commercial related to thousands of students across the country, and Google was able to achieve this through various forms of rhetorical persuasion.
Google’s best move was the time of their release or their kairos. Google released their video on May 20, 2014. This was about a month before most high school seniors were graduating. Google could not have picked a more opportune time to release this video. Most seniors are becoming nostalgic about their past four years in high school at the time around graduation. Google picked up on this and published a commercial that would not only pull at the heart strings of students, but also teachers and parents. The kairos brought about the discussion of graduation and high school accomplishments. Students became emotionally invested in the conversations surrounding their future, and Google was now a part of that conversation. Google found a way to become more personal and they did at the exact right time. Therefore, their commercial was watched by over 4 million people on YouTube, not to mention the countless times it played on every television station until the end of July when the nostalgia of high school finally started wearing off.
The time of release of this commercial was superb, however if it were not for the actual content, the commercial would not have the impact it had. Google greatly used pathos to grab the attention of their audience. The video starts off with the nervousness of a freshman about to start school. Any student can relate to that first day of starting at a new school. Google encompasses that feeling through the compilation of students picking out outfits, working at their locker combination, and meeting their new teachers. Every girl has spent countless hours putting together the perfect first day outfit, it’s a memory that invokes years of anxiety, thrill, and joy of being back with friends. As the video progresses, viewers see students participating in different activities such as band, robotics club, and the junior military academy. Google knows students will think of all the sleepless nights and early morning band practices they muddled through, when they watch a clip of a girl complaining about her workload or a band practicing on the football field. Google has produced a reflection of their consumers to make the consumers feel more at ease with their label. In using this strategy, they have their consumers emotionally attached to the video, which makes the commercial a personal token instead of just another plea for attention.
The use of commonplaces in the video further the consumer’s interest in Google. The company uses the significance of life events to connect with the consumer. The most important being receiving a license to drive. Teenagers mark that event as the first milestone of independence. It is a universal idea that someone who knows how to drive, has reached a mature point in their life. Google highlights the excitement and pride teens show after receiving their license, yet again igniting the excitement of all the viewers sitting at home watching. Braces have become the signal of perfect teeth. Almost every child who could afford even the thought of getting braces, had them. The more significant part was the great reveal, when the teeth were all finally perfectly lined up. Google takes advantage of that feeling of relief and reminds students of the time they went to get their braces removed. They are calling out to the community of young adults to reach back and remember their past, because Google had to be involved at some point during that process.
Google has folded in ideologies of the American mind in their ad to further support their product. The two main ones identified are the idea of the perfect prom and the impressive graduation. Here in the United States, prom is not just another dance. Prom is the last hurrah, the last chance to prove yourself to your peers. Prom has become the dance where each person is allowed to be special and pretty. Google wants to make you feel pretty and special, so they can’t leave out the one day that reflects those exact qualities. The other significant ideology is the picture of a student receiving their diploma in their cap and gown. The image that follows that is the image of a college acceptance letter and plenty of loud screams for accompaniment. Google checks all those points with the last part of their video. They play out several students exclaiming their overwhelming joy of being accepted into college. Some of the students are surrounded by their families, other students are filmed by their parents, while other look up how far their new home is located. This is all followed by several graduation caps being thrown in the air, marking the end of one chapter and the search of another. Google cleverly ends the video with the phrase Search On. They have taken the American ideologies and created a commercial that fits into the boundaries of those ideologies.
Google has produced a very successful commercial with their emotional play on consumers’ hearts. In fact, it is very noticeable at how little Google actually shows its products,they want to show you more of the clippings from everyday life, so you feel emotionally connected to the video. This works, because as a graduating senior students are thinking about the journey they have taken for the last four years, which encompasses so much of what google shows. If one was to watch this at the end of their senior year, which is when google released the ad, you take a personal interest in the ad and are more likely to incorporate more google into your life. This was a very smart marketing strategy. They also keep it short and simple in the design as to not overwhelm the viewers but enough to still hold a space in our memories. Google has showed the world its great capability to take on almost any project and make it Googly, and in this ad they are forcing us to demonstrate our googliness.

For example, “By releasing their video on May 20, 2014, a month before high school seniors were graduating, Google employed a specific time of release, or kairos to their advertisement.”

If you ever worked with native shared libraries in Android you’ve probably already faced the “java.lang.UnsatisfiedLinkError” java exception which randomly seems to happen on certain devices ( actually it’s happening on xperia phones mostly, based on my reports ).

There are no whispers of tired men. The babies seem to be attentive to what Atticus has to say. The wind does not even dare to stir. The birds stop their chattering and pecking. The room seems tired and weary but is ready for anything. The squeaky benches lose their high pitches in the silence. Everything is alert to Atticus.
I think that Atticus’ use of pathos, ethos, and logos, is effective. His voice and gestures help make his concluding argument stronger. In the following paragraphs, I will specifically demonstrate the strength of Atticus’ words.
Atticus is given the case of his life. Atticus’ closing remarks are dynamic. Because Atticus is a man who believes in equality, he tells the jury that they must put aside their “secret courts.” He is making the jury feel powerful because they are determining Tom’s future. His voice is full of trust, trust in the jury to make the right decision. Even though he knows that he cannot win, he makes them believe they can think for themselves instead of letting Maycomb influence them. Atticus knows that everyone is weary, but he still tells them, “In the name of God, do your duty.”
Atticus is calm throughout the trial. He sits in his chair after asking pertinent questions in a very calm matter. He would stroll across the court, stare at the window, and ask his question in a friendly way. He is polite to every witness including Mayella. He acts inside the court as if he is anywhere else. After beating Mayella with his clarifications, he is ashamed of himself. Atticus tells the court that he has nothing but sympathy for Mayella. However, she is asserting that an innocent man is guilty, so Atticus’ pity does not extend that far. Atticus is a simple lawyer and uses his simplicity to tell the court that this should never have come to court. It is a straightforward “black and white” case. Atticus is able to grasp the jury’s attention for three whole hours. He does not belie.

Causal Argument: Does Violence In The Media Affect Children?
Violence is found all around us in the media. Parents are becoming worried about what their children are exposed to. There has been an ongoing debate as to whether violence in the media can affect children to imitate acts of violence. After much research I have found there is a link between watching violence, and committing acts of violence. Children who are exposed to excessive amounts of violence on television, in video games, and through song lyrics, than children who are not, are much more likely to commit acts of violence later in their lives.
Many wonder if watching violence on television can influence individuals to act violently, and many studies have found a link between viewing violence on TV and committing acts of violence later in life. For example, University of Michigan psychologists Leonard Eron and Rowell Huesmann conducted a study spanning decades where they watched over 800 preschoolers, and followed them until adulthood to see how television violence affected them. The study concluded that children who watched excessive amounts of television tended to be more aggressive towards other children. Eron and Huesman checked back with the preschoolers eleven and twenty two years ago, and found that the aggressive preschools became even more aggressive as they got older with more acts of domestic violence, and more traffic tickets than their peers. Many experts also believe that when children view violence on television they try to imitate what they see. For instance, there was an incident when a five year old, while watching the cartoon Beavis and Butthead saw the characters? obsession with fire, and decided to light his house on fire, which killed his little sister (Children, Media and Violence). Not only are children exposed to violence on television, violence is also found in video games.
With the recent advancements in technology, video games are looking more and more realistic every day. With the introduction of better video games systems, and graphics, video games are becoming increasingly popular with children and teenagers. Some might argue that video games cannot influence young people, because they are aware that the games are fantasy, but studies conducted by the Surgeon General and a National Institute of Mental Health concluded that the more realistic something looks, the more likely it will be ?learned. This simply means that the more realistic something looks, the more influential it will be to the individual viewing it. (American Academy of Pediatrics Online). The National Institute of Mental Health also claims that children up to age eight cannot distinguish between real life and fantasy, so when they play these games they believe that committing acts of violence is an effective form of problem solving. The National Coalition on Television Violence found that in Mortal Kombat, one of the best selling video games of all time, your object is not just to kill your opponent, but to master your skills at doing so (Children Youth and Family Consortium Electronic Clearinghouse). This kind of play has to affect children. People are most impressionistic when they are young, and they learn by their actions. They win the game for killing everyone. This teaches makes them more tolerant of violence, and more likely to commit violent crimes later in life.
Music is another form of media, which influences children and teenagers. In 1995, Entertainment Monitor reported that ?only 10 out of the top 40 popular CD?s on sale during the holiday season were free of profanity, or lyrics dealing with drugs, violence, and sex. Rap superstar, Eminem?s CD titled. The Marshall Mathers LP? has already sold more than 4.1 million albums, and is currently at the top of the music charts (Billboard.com) has already stirred up tons of controversy with its lyrics. The Marshall Mathers LP? has songs titled ?Criminal. Drug Ballad. and ?Kill You. According to Eminem?s success, this is what people enjoy listening to. They do not seem bothered by the language or subjects. Not only are the lyrics explicitly violent, but they do influence the children who listen to it. Rap music is not the only genre of music containing violent lyrics. There was an incident where a teenager shot his parents, and claimed that listing to music by gothic artist Marilyn Manson drove him to such extremes. Marilyn Manson has created a whole new trend among young people. They call their look ?gothic? and wear black clothing. Sometimes they paint their faces white, and wear dog collars, much like their idol Manson.
If there is someone to blame for all this violence in our media, it would be the entertainment industry; however, they argue that they are giving the public what they want. This is not a true statement according to Michael Medved, who has written books where he analyzed media violence. Medved analyzed all films that were released between 1980 and 1992 and found that ?family? films earned more than twice as much on average as violent films. This data is surprising considering that violent films made up over sixty percent of the films released. So, is the public really getting what they want? The entertainment industry also claims that television does not harm children, because they can distinguish between what is real and what is fake. Once again, they are wrong. Many preschoolers while watching Sesame Street cannot tell whether the Muppets are real or fake. They do not comprehend that Big Bird is really a man dressed up in a costume (American Academy of Pediatrics).
In conclusion, violence in the media does not seem to be going away. It is all around our children; on television, in video games, and in music. Until the entertainment industry decides to limit the amount of violence we are exposed to, it will always be a problem. Then again, without the media who knows where we would be today. We might live in a much safer society.

Rhetoric and Rhetorical Schemes
The definition of rhetoric is as simple as the art of persuasion, but what makes rhetoric effective is the way it is applied. In order to use rhetoric in writing and in speech, the meaning of rhetoric and its purpose must be clearly understood. Rhetoric involves more than just what is written, but how it is arranged. Other writing tactics also are used to make rhetoric what it is.
Rhetoric can be described as the art of effective, eloquent, and persuasive writing and/or deliverance of a speech. The use of rhetoric ages back to the times of the ancient Greek. Plato, a famous Greek philosopher, saw rhetoric only useful and admirable if it was an expression of truth. Aristotle, another Greek philosopher, disagreed. He felt that rhetoric was focused on the invention of the argument. In Aristotle s point of view, the argument was meant to seek the truth and also appeal to reason, ethics, and emotion. Although both of the great philosophers saw rhetoric in two slightly different aspects, it was still used to persuade an audience.
Quintilian was a Latin scholar who used five different elements to perfect the art of rhetoric. These five steps helped the speaker or writer use rhetoric to its fullest. Inventio is the first of the five elements, and is the Latin word for invention. The idea is to first recognize what kind of audience the essay or speech is directed at, and then invent arguments that appeal to the audience ethically, logically, and/or emotionally. Dispositio is the second element, which means arrangement in Latin. In order for an argument to be effective it must be arranged properly. The third element in Quintilian s arrangement is Elocutio. In Latin, Elocutio, means style. This is the way the author or speaker uses diction and syntax. Memoria, which is the fourth element, is Latin for memory. This element is necessary for effective speeches, but it not a vital element in essays and other writings. When a speech is memorized it flows more smoothly, and doesn t allow unintended breaks to distract the audience. The last of the five elements is pronuntiatio. In Latin this is the word for delivery. In writing this is the tone in which the author uses in his writing, where as, in speech it is the speaker s voice and his gestures that matter.
Although Quintilian s five elements help a person compose a rhetorical essay or speech, they do not include certain schemes that construct rhetoric. A few of the basic schemes of rhetoric are parallelism, anaphora, and climax. These schemes help enhance persuasive arguments. Parallelism is the arrangement of a series of related words. An example of this is found in Abraham Lincoln s second inaugural address. It states, With malice toward none; with charity for all; with firmness in the right Anaphora is the repeated use of the same group of words used to begin successive sentences or clauses. An example of this can be found in Ecclesiastes 3:1-2. For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven: a time to be born, and a time to die; a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted Climax is the way words and sentences are arranged to imply the order of rising events that led to the magnitude of the story. An example of this is in Melville s novel, Moby Dick.
All that most maddens and torments; all that stirs up the lees of things; all truth with malice in it; all that cracks the sinews and cakes the brain; all the subtle demonisms of life and thought; all evil, to crazy Ahab, were visibly personified and made practically assailable in Moby Dick.
These three writing schemes are just a few examples that are used to effectively embellish the use of rhetoric.
From the time of the ancient Greeks until present, rhetoric has been used effectively in works of writing and in speeches. Plato, Aristotle, and Quintilian have illustrated the use and tactics of rhetoric wonderfully. Though in the ancient Greeks time rhetoric was meant to be used only to persuade something truthful or seek something truthful, it now it is used heavily by politicians. Although its purpose has somewhat changed over the years, its function has stayed the same.
