Wave Race ( ウエーブレース. Uēbu Rēsu ? ) is a 1992 personal watercraft racing video game developed by Nintendo EAD and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Game Boy. It is the first game in the Wave Race series. The game is relatively simple, in that the player controls a jet skier around a track aiming to beat the computer or up to three friends using the link cable accessory.

Contents Gameplay [ edit ]

There are two modes in which the game may be played:

The goal is to race through pairs of posts across the track. Each one passed through increases the player's score by one point. The player with the most points once all posts have been taken wins.

A race in which the player must proceed through certain checkpoints and complete each lap in a time limit. Two powerups are available on the track. The dolphin gives the player increased turning ability, while the octopus allows the recipient to steal from opponents.

In both modes there are a variety of obstacles including ramps, shallow water and whirlpools. There are eight tracks for each mode. [ citation needed ]

The game includes sixteen courses. The tracks have obstacles (buoys, pylons) and jumps. Players begin at a slower class of watercraft and graduate to faster engines. Players can also use a limited turbo boost. The game features four-player multiplayer. [1]

Nintendo Power wrote that the game successfully emulated the feel of watercraft racing. The reviewers praised the effect of skidding around corners, and recommended the four-player multiplayer experience. [1]

Sequels [ edit ]

Wave Race sold well enough to earn a Player's Choice medal and was later followed by two sequels: Wave Race 64 and Wave Race: Blue Storm . Unlike the first game, Wave Race 64 and Wave Race: Blue Storm were also released in Japan.

People observe races just about of anything that moves. Even of jet skis. So what about put that on a game and capitalize on the overly jet ski racing phenomenon? Wave Race 64 deliver Jet Ski racing like no game had before. Though aren’t many Jet Ski racing games to choose, but you get my point. It has Kawasaki license, customizable Jet Skis, nine tracks with actual wave physics and on top of that, an announcer guy and an awesome soundtrack. Usually games like this have some sort of rock music, but not this time. The music of Wave Race 64 sounds like belongs to Mario Kart or something. I think Nintendo didn’t want spend their money on bands like Offspring or Bad Religion…Thank God!

The game is so much fun. There’s so many ways to play: Circuit mode, time trial, versus, and of course, the stunt mode. It is all about doing tricks for High scores. This is so much fun and so exciting. I mean, even Miyamoto said Wave Race 64 utilizes 80% of the Nintendo 64 power. Man, for a game that was a Nintendo 64 launch title, that’s pretty special. If you want to play one racing Jet power game, you better get wave Race 64.

Wave Race is a series of jet ski racing games by Nintendo. first originating on the Game Boy in 1992. Wave Race 64. released for the Nintendo 64 in 1996 (and later on the Wii Virtual Console in 2007), is the best known and most well-loved of the lot of them. Wave Race: Blue Storm. released as a launch title for the Nintendo GameCube in 2001, is the most recent release.

64 was notable in its use of very realistic wave physics, which use up approximately 80 percent of the system's power. Blue Storm is known for in particular for its waves being effected by the constantly changing weather, adding more depth to its races.

Wave Race contains examples of:
  • Dolphins, Dolphins Everywhere. They serve as power ups that help you steer better, make you immune to whirlpools and let you more easily move through shallow water.
  • Everything's Squishier with Cephalopods. Supposedly they are octopus but they look more like jellyfish. Regardless, they serve as one of your power ups. Bumping into people with one lets you steal their turbos. This kind of slows you down but it may be worth it for the extra turbo and further discourages them from trying to push you off course.
  • Inconveniently Placed Conveyor Belt. The arrows, even though they don't look like it.
  • Plot What Plot
  • Ramp Jump. Not always the best thing to do but there are lots of opportunities to do so. The problem is it increases your speed but since you can't turn in air and have no breaks that can be bad. Trying to adjust the length of your jump can also make you lose control.
  • Scoring Points. The point of Slalom mode is to go through the most check points to win the most points.
  • Top-Down View
  • Wacky Racing. More than the sequels, better get used to ramming other racers, especially on narrow water ways.
Wave Race 64 contains examples of:
  • Announcer Chatter. Boy, he never shuts up.
  • Balance, Power, Skill, Gimmick. Ryota is balanced, Ayumi has low speed but high acceleration (Fragile Speedster ), Dave has high speed but low acceleration (Mighty Glacier ), Miles has medium stats but extremely high turning (gimmick).
  • But Not Too Foreign. Ayumi Stewart is Japanese-American.
  • Cosmetic Award. Perform well enough in Championship Mode and you'll see whales on the final course.
  • Friendly, Playful Dolphin. On the practice track Dolphin Park.
  • Jack-of-All-Stats. Ryota Hayami.
  • Mighty Glacier. Dave Mariner, who is very fast for his size yet has poor handling, grip, and acceleration to go along with it. Best recommended for advanced players.
  • Ominous Fog. Drake Lake, though it does clear up eventually.
  • Product Placement. Kawasaki and Fanta soft drink sponsor this game, and their ads appear nearly everywhere. Its Virtual Console release has them removed and the banners replaced with Wii and DS ads, though.
  • Slippy-Slidey Ice World. Glacier coast
  • The Smurfette Principle. Ayumi Stewart is the only female character.
  • Super Title 64 Advance
  • Theme-and-Variations Soundtrack. In true Kazumi Totaka fashion, nearly every track uses a variation of the theme song, or at least a Recurring Riff. This even extends to other areas like the options menu and the name entry screen.
  • Time Trial. The only thing you'll be doing in the dolphin area besides free roaming is this, you can do trials on all the other courses too.
  • Title Scream
  • Unstable Equilibrium. Going through buoys correctly speeds you up. Missing too many buoys automatically disqualifies you, likely because if you've been missing there would be no way to catch up anyway.
  • Videogame 3 D Leap
Wave Race: Blue Storm contains examples of:
  • Anti-Climax. The last course in expert mode, Strong Water Keep, is pretty short, after you've seen them get progressively longer. Especially since it comes after the unforgiving La Razza Canal!
  • Bat Family Crossover. Features three guest stars from 1080� Snowboarding. including Akari Hayami. Instead of averting One Steve Limit with Ryota Hayami, the two are siblings and the games take place in the same universe.
  • The Capital Of Brazil Is Buenos Aires. Seems to be the case with Serena Del Mar.
  • Chuck Cunningham Syndrome. Miles Jeter from 64 .
  • Darker and Edgier. Compared to 64. In addition to the much steeper learning curve, the mood is also decidedly less cheerful in Blue Storm. The color palette is dimmer, the almost overly enthusiastic 64 announcer has been replaced with racer-specific announcers that are usually far more direct and blunt, and the soundtrack replaces the cheery J-Pop of 64 with a more rock/techno influenced style.
  • Deadpan Snarker. There is a code that unlocks the ability for the announcer to snark at you every chance he gets .
  • Difficulty Spike. The most twitch heavy race in the game isn't even in expert mode, it is the race you need to get through to be able to race in expert mode! Some of its courses kind of come close but then expert mode ends with a sharp difficulty drop for some reason.
    • Sequel Difficulty Spike. Even putting weather aside, this game is faster, more complex and requires more precise handling than the Nintendo 64 game. It also lacks the power ups of the game boy title despite bringing back some of its mechanics.
  • Jerk Ass. The hidden announcer. Calls you names, has absolutely no faith in you, and even if you do win he never lets up with the contempt.
    • Brutal Honesty. If you actually suck.
  • Geo Effects. The waves are random in this game, but if you know the track, you can look at the forecast to predict how they will behave with some level of reliability. Riding the waves and weather to your character's advantage is essential in the circuit mode.
  • Hostile Weather. It may sometimes feel like it. Don't count on the forecasts to be 100% accurate.
  • Ninja Butterfly. Every racer has their own crew chief who constantly updates them on their status.
  • Nitro Boost. A turbo meter, which can be filled by correctly passing buoys or by doing stunts unlike in the game boy game where it refilled on its own and could be stolen from other racers. Stunts were only for scoring in one mode in 64 .
  • Secret Level. The Tsumnami Zone
  • Shaggy Search Technique. Many shortcuts can be found behind breakable barriers on the waterways. Which parts are breakable and which aren't is not always an easy distinction to make however.

Super80sMan: Not sure if this was already mentioned here or not, but this is actually not the original Wave Race. The original came out on the Game Boy in the early 90s. Its a top down racer which is actually pretty fun and gives you the feeling of racing on water to the extent that a top down grayscale racer could..

borobengal: No Wave Race 4 on the Wii. Looks like it aint going to happen on the Wii U or 3DS. Classic game on the N64. The first one on the GB is decent. Drake Lake is a legendary course. Even in 2014, this still plays ace. The GC version, it wasn't done by the same team that did the N64 version, which is probably why it's crap.

Mic Perez: I love this game. I didnt like blue storm because they took away all the aspects that made this game good. Blue storm didnt have water level that changes and I didnt like that the levels were too narrow. I love the music on this game too.

borobengal: Wave Race started on the GB and is a great game. The GC version was terrible. It's shocking that Nintendo didn't release a new one for the Wii. Looking at Wii Sports (jetski) on this vid, a new one would of been ace, so fingers crossed on the Wii U. But with Nintendo not releasing a lot of games for their consoles, it's 50/50. Wave Race 64 on the 3DS would be better than remakes of Zelda and Starfox, not forgetting New Super Mario Bros. which is Nintendo's latest milked series.

Breakdown of Wave Race 64's Game Elements:

Graphics:5 out of 5: The graphics in Wave Race are incredible! The water looks and moves extremely realistically -- it has to be seen to be believed. The action is extremely fluid (pun intended) with no slowdown in sight. Like Pilotwings 64, Wave Race does not fill the whole screen. This is hardly even noticeable, however, because the game is letterboxed (unlike Pilotwings, which just had a black bar across the bottom), giving the game a classy, polished look. There are lots of very impressive graphics effects such as mist, wonderful reflections, and real time lens flares!

Music:5 out of 5: The music of Wave Race 64 is by far the best music yet on the N64. The crisp, CD quality tunes full of high quality instruments and synthesizers ooze from the game. The music fits the game beautifully, keeping the mood light hearted and relaxed (no hyper Mario tunes here!).

Sound FX:5 out of 5: Tons of voice! I can't imagine how they got it all on a cart. There are both male and female announcers throughout the game. They give you feedback on how you're doing, and often encourage you when you're not doing so well. The male announcer is who you hear during and after each race, and the female announcer welcomes you before each race and give you tips while warming up.

The other effects in Wave Race are sharp, clear and realistic, which only adds to the gaming experience.

Play Control:9 out of 10: This game lets you come close to oneness with the computer! The analog control allows for wonderful control of the Jet Skis. The stunts can be a little hard to master -- but not impossible or frustrating at all. The reason Wave Race doesn't get a 10 in play control is that the different racers control so differently that it is a little difficult getting used to each character. Some characters are actually fairly difficult to control. All the players are completely customizable though, so if you mess with the settings enough, you're sure to find a satisfactory setup.

Frustration Factor:2 out of 10 (10 being the worst ): Wave Race is just plain fun. The game opens up tracks for practice when you reach them in the Championship mode and not after you complete them, so you can practice and master each track before trying to go through a whole circuit in one Championship game. The net result is steady, enjoyable progress in the game.

The only thing that can be frustrating is that you can get wiped out by another player or obstacle and quickly lose a game before you know what hit you. You can literally go from being less than a second away from first to a second away from fourth -- with little control over the situation. This is more prevalent in the Hard and Expert modes, where the opponents and the courses are much tougher. Overall, losing this quickly doesn't happen often, but when it does, it definitely sucks! This is really the only frustrating part of the game.

This rare album is great! If you've ever played the game, you'd know how the music adds to the effect of the game. I mean, most of the level tracks are upbeat and fast, adding some suspense and excitement too the race.

The only thing I really don't like about this OST is the first BONUS TRACK. The Game Staff Voice. It’s so annoying, and it makes me wonder why the hell it got put into the CD in the first place. But, that is so easily overlooked, it won't affect its final score in the end.

Overall, I would say this is a great OST that no VGM collector should do without. It's a rare find, though.

I gave this a 75%. I enjoyed this album, although, it does get a little repetitive in the end, and we all know, the N64's Sith isn't so good to begin with. But, none the less, this is a great OST.
