Humanities graduate announced runner-up for Undergraduate Essay Competition

Harry McCarthy has been awarded the runner-up prize for the 2015 R. Gapper Undergraduate Essay Competition, run by The Society for French Studies.

Harry, who graduated with a BA in English and French earlier this year, was selected for the prize following his submitted essay: ‘Discuss how Proust’s syntax and imagery interact with the thematic preoccupations of the novel [A la recherche du temps perdu].’

The R. Gapper Undergraduate Essay Competition is organised by The Society for French Studies. The Society represents the interests of students and scholars of French Studies across the Higher Education sector in the UK and Ireland.

Harry’s submitted essay was written as an assignment for the Level 3 French studies module Proust's A La recherche du temps perdu. delivered by Professor Adam Watt .

Professor Watt said of Harry’s achievement: “The Society for French Studies R. Gapper Undergraduate Prize awards the very best work by UG students in the UK, so it is terrifically gratifying to have a prize-winner from Exeter. Working on Proust’s A la recherche du temps perdu with the finalists at Exeter is a great privilege. Harry’s essay was outstanding and we’re thrilled he has been rewarded for his hard work.”

Professor Watt is a specialist on the work of Marcel Proust, author of Reading in Proust’s A la recherche: ‘le délire de la lecture’ (Oxford, 2009); The Cambridge Introduction to Marcel Proust (Cambridge, 2011); an illustrated critical biography, Marcel Proust (2013; Chinese edition 2014); and, as editor, Marcel Proust in Context (Cambridge, 2013); and, this year, Swann at 100/Swann à 100 ans, a special number of the journal Marcel Proust Aujourd'hui, which consists of papers delivered at the centenary conference held in Exeter in 2013.

Speaking about his assignment, Harry added: “The intricacy of Proust's prose and its effects on the reader is something that fascinated me from the beginning, so I was delighted to have the opportunity to write on this aspect of the novel under Professor Adam Watt's expert guidance.

I'm very grateful to the Society for recognising what became such an important piece of work to me personally in this way.”

As part of our Google's commitment to military veterans, Google established the Google SVA Scholarship in partnership with Student Veterans of America. The scholarship provides assistance to student veterans who are pursuing university degrees in the field of computer science in the U.S. Selected students will receive 10,000 USD for the 2014-2015 school year and will be invited to attend the Google Scholars’ Retreat in the summer of 2014.

To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

  • Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at a university for the 2013­-2014 academic year
  • Intend to be enrolled in or accepted as a full-­time student at a university in the United States for the 2014-­2015 academic year
  • Maintain a strong academic performance
  • Be pursuing a Computer Science or Computer Engineering degree, or a degree in a closely related technical field
  • Exemplify leadership and demonstrate a passion for computer science and technology
  • Have received an honorable discharge, or is in good standing with his/her branch of service

You will be asked to complete an online application through SVA which must include:

  • General background information (e.g. contact information and details about your current and intended institutions for the 2014-2015 school year)
  • Resume/CV
  • Academic transcripts from your current and prior institution (if you have earned a prior degree)
  • DD Form 214 Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty (DD-214)

We believe this program is as unique as it is revolutionary. It redefines how figurative artists see their work and how that art finds its way into the world of commerce—fine art, illustration and publication. It begins with developing a personal vision. Vision is not style. Whether the work is tightly rendered, loose, more or less expressive or Photoshopped, we help you to achieve personal content in your work—to tell your story as only you can. When your “style” is personal content, the images you make can only be original.

The program is difficult, demanding and highly selective. At the same time, it is an opportunity to be with exceptional artists like yourself exchanging ideas and sharing information, as well as simply hanging out. Each class becomes a community of figurative artists whose interest in storytelling encompasses all 21st-century media: graphic and illustrated novels, children’s books, comic books, and painting series for gallery walls. But, when you tap into your personal vision and find your own stories, the applications for the work flow naturally.

We focus on teaching how to combine words with images, continually refining and re-defining your personal vision. Our faculty is made up of illustrators, fine artists, computer artists, writers, art historians and art directors. The contact with faculty is personal, constant and intense. We accept only 20 students per year in the two-year program. It is a classroom-based curriculum, unlike many graduate programs where students work independently with scheduled faculty oversight. Close interaction between faculty and student, as well as with other classmates, is an essential part of the creative process that is our program.

Each student has a personal workspace with 24-hour access, seven days a week. In addition to required classes, graduate students can audit classes from the various diverse offerings in our undergraduate college, including film, animation, fine arts and humanities. Guest speakers from the outstanding New York professional arts community are regularly scheduled. Being in New York City, the opportunities for access to working artists, gallery shows, museum exhibitions and internships are not inconsequential to laying a foundation for a life as an artist. In the second year, students are encouraged to choose their thesis advisors according to their interests. Our advisors, past and present, are as diverse as they are celebrated in their fields. Yuko Shimizu, Steve Brodner, Gary Panter, Maira Kalman, Sam Weber, Stephen Savage, Paul Buckley, Guy Billout and Pat Cummings are among them.

The process involved in developing a truly personal vision is risky. It demands you be open to thinking in new ways, reassess your drawing and painting skills, put your creativity on the line and free your imagination. We offer you the chance to compete using your own vision.

Beginning as a trade school with three instructors and 35 students, The School of Visual Arts has grown into a dynamic, multi-disciplianty institution with a faculty of more than 80 and a student body over 3500.
SVA offers undergraduate programs in Advertising, Animation, Cartooning, Computer Art, Film & Video, Fine Arts, Graphic Design, Illustration, Interior Design, Photography, and Visual and Critical Studies. The undergraduate program is a four-year, full-time Bachelor of Fine Arts degree program with courses offered throughout the day and evening.
SVA offers rigorous and practice-based graduate arts programs in ten different areas of study.
In 1983, the School of Visual Arts introduced its first graduate offering, a Master of Fine Arts program in painting, drawing and sculpture. SVA awards partial tuition scholarships to help talented students realize their dreams of becoming professional artists. Scholarships are primarily available to full-time students seeking admission to the fall semester, and are based on academic and creative merit. First-time freshman awards are renewable for each of the subsequent three years, providing the recipient maintains full-time enrollment and a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.0.
Named for SVA's founder and chairman of the board, this competition awards partial-tuition scholarships to applicants from the United States and abroad. The scholarships are awarded strictly on merit and recognize the creative and academic achievements of applicants.
First-time freshman and transfer applicants seeking admission to a full-time undergraduate program for the fall or spring semesters are eligible for this award.
Working in support of the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers, SVA offers two scholarships through the Scholastic Art Awards national competition. SVA will select two recipients: one in art & design and one in photography from the list of winners forwarded by the Scholastic Art Awards.

The Estey Competition is a great opportunity for students, who have demonstrated an interest in business or accounting/finance ethics, to submit a research paper for a chance to win $500 and present their paper at the 2015 Canadian Academic Accounting Association (CAAA) annual meeting. All eligible students are encouraged to speak with his/her professor to submit their research papers for review.
