The Dialogues of Plato deal ultimately with that subject to which Plato devoted his life: Philosophy. The etymology of the word, then, gives us a clue as to Plato’s concern. Thus philia, friendship or love, finds its object in sophia, wisdom, and its companion sophorosyne, or the spirit embodied by the Delphic imperatives “Know Thyself” and “To Thyself be True. ” In service of this love of and for wisdom Plato wrote the Dialogues. To this end, Plato expounds the definition of a philosopher, what it means to be a true philosopher, and the conditions for a philosophic life. Before he can do this, however, he is compelled to qualify the common term in the list above. What is the “wisdom” to which the philosopher is attracted? Plato considered wisdom to be that knowledge which is concerned with the real. This answer, however, brings to light questions of its own, namely, what is real? This metaphysical question suggests that Plato’s pursuit of wisdom must first address what, in Plato’s conception, is real. In defining what is “real” in the service of his love of wisdom, Plato defines for himself and his philosophy a horizon within which to consider the issue of knowledge and pursuit of reality.
Thus, before Plato can act upon his inclination towards wisdom, he must define the set of the real. A brief summary of Plato’s presuppositions will here aid in understanding his emergent conception metaphysics and its relation to his thought. In following with the Greek tradition, Plato believed that the “world is system, is organic [and] therefore both orderly and alive.” Further, he took the doctrine that logos is “nature steering all things from within” to the heart of his philosophy. In 1948 in Paris, a group of writers and thinkers would found The College of ’Pataphysics, still going strong today. The iconoclastic Ren� Daumal was the first to elaborate upon Jarry’s unique and humorous philosophy. Though Daumal is better known for his unfinished novel Mount Analogue and his refusal to be adopted by the Surrealist movement, this newly translated volume of writings offers a glimpse at an often overlooked Daumal: Daumal the pataphysician. Pataphysical Essays collects Daumal’s overtly pataphysical writings from 1929 to 1941, from his landmark exposition on pataphysics and laughter to his late essay, “The Pataphysics of Ghosts.” Daumal’s “Treatise on Patagrams” offers the reader everything from a recipe for the disintegration of a photographer to instructions on how to drill a fount of knowledge in a public urinal. Metaphysical poetry is concerned with the whole experience of man, but the intelligence, learning and seriousness of the poets means that the poetry is about the profound areas of experience especially - about love, romantic and sensual; about man's relationship with God - the eternal perspective, and, to a less extent, about pleasure, learning and art. Metaphysical poems are lyric poems. They are brief but intense meditations, characterized by striking use of wit, irony and wordplay. Beneath the formal structure (of rhyme, metre and stanza) is the underlying (and often hardly less formal) structure of the poem's argument. Note that there may be two (or more) kinds of argument in a poem. In To His Coy Mistress the explicit argument (Marvell's request that the coy lady yield to his passion) is a stalking horse for the more serious argument about the transitoriness of pleasure. The outward levity conceals (barely) a deep seriousness of intent. You would be able to show how this theme of carpe diem (“seize the day”) is made clear in the third section of the poem.
