Friendship Essay, Research Paper
There are many valuable things in life, but friendship may be one of the most important. To live life without the experience of friendship, is life without living. Human interaction is a necessity to survival, but developed friendships are essential to the successful well being of anyone. Based upon Webster’s Dictionary, the definition of a friend is, “A person whom one knows, likes and trusts.” But to all, Friendship has no defined terminology. The definition of a friend, and friendship, is based upon one’s own notions. Many people look for different characteristics in friends, things that may be common in nature. There are many different types of friends that one wants or needs. There are Five different categories for these friends. It is best in nature to recognize and appreciate various kinds of friends.
The first type of friend in the friendship is an acquaintance. This is the beginning to all basics, and deeper friendships. This is the person with whom, is only known on a pure, and basic level. The insight to this person’s life, is merely an observation from a person’s perception. Usually, these are the types of friends that a person may meet in school, at work, local hang outs, or somewhere that is frequented often. They are greeted with a mere smile, and daily greeting. These are the people that know of their acquaintance’s existence and appreciate their effort. Their kind words can put a smile on the face of anyone, but the true meaning is hardly the truth. The Waitress at the local restaurant could be an acquaintance, if she knows a person’s regular routine, as well as waves if she is seen outside of work. The traditional acquaintance may be someone that
sits in class that is shared. It could even be a friend of a friend, someone that is seen frequently but the extent of conversations rarely going into depth. These persons we meet, hardly speak to, but we honour their existence. Once an acquaintance is found to be on a more common level, they may move into another category of friends.
The second category of friends is, Lifelong friends. They may have grown up next-door, or with these types of friends, are friends that are most cherished and respected. These types of people, will be there through the thick and thin. They are there without prejudice. They are valued as a friend, and cherished as family. A lifelong friend is someone with you can be sincere, yet honest with. Life long friends care about the individual inside, the values and morals that are yet forgotten in today’s society. It’s important that this person is upheld and respected in the manner in which is expected in return. It is the person with that is felt to be comfortable with, even at worst. Impatience is never an issue, concern for the individual is always the concern. They may have been a buddy in Kindergarten, maybe the little girl who was the playground bully, but now
the protector of all. In the foundation of life long friendship, tears will be shed and the bond developed between two individuals is one of the closest relationships one can have.
The next category of friends, and quite possibly the most important to the development of one’s identity, is the best friend. The best friend is the most trusted friend there is. They may change throughout life, but at the time, they may be one of the most important aspects of ones life. The person, who fulfils that role, will share many common bonds. Secrets are kept and smiles are a natural part of the relationship. This is the person who’s spare time is spent sharing common bonds, or just moral support. A best friend expects a lot of each, but in return they can be best morale you can get. Best friends can be supportive, but most of all, they tell it they way it is, or should be. These people are usually the friend that share all of the common ground. They have proven themselves. They may have been a highschool friend that dressed the same, or had
the same classes.
There are also friends that may be considered tradition friends. These are the people that you may talk to, but it’s not a necessity. They are people one could hang out with to expand their surroundings. There are there to listen, but they are not as trusting as a best friend. Usually these are people that are not important to your survival. These types of friends can come and go through out ones life. They are different faces and names, but they all serve the same purpose, to be there when convenient. A typical friend like this maybe someone that went to the same highschool, or someone who may have been involved in the same activities.
Finally, the last type of friend is a Significant other, many would argue with this, but actually it is a bond or form of friendship. In order to become a significant other, there must be a union of spirits. It is developed and formed at a partnership. To have this, they must share similar traits. There must be trust, confidence, and a commitment, all viable aspects in friends. Love is a form of friendship that is created without selfishness. These people that would fall in the category of Significant Others would be boyfriends, girlfriends, husbands or wives.
After looking at the different aspects of friendship, it is obvious the inflictions that it makes on life. Life cannot be lived without the doings of friends. The effect of human love is one of life’s finer indulgences. It is nearly impossible to avoid friendships, but it is ever important to everyone to have these friendships. Friends make true friendships possible, and with that, It makes life possible.

It is sometimes said that borrowing money from a friend can harm or damage the friendship.
Do you agree? Why or why not?
To have good friend is necessary in life. Borrowing money from friend could harm relationship. I believe that it could create negative impact on friendship.
Money and friendship are those two words that do not belong in the same sentence. If you're strapped for cash and thinking about asking a friend for money, decide what is needed more, money or friendship. For example, when I was in university, my friend asked me to pay his tuition fee. I paid that, and when I asked him to return it back, it wreaks havoc on our relation. In fact my intention was to help him when he need, but when time came to return that back, he took it to his self esteem. So, might be your way of perceiving relation is different from others.
Moreover, when you ask for favor, they ask that in return. This means that they will always gaze at you as the one they helped. And rather it would seem like they have owe you for long time. In addition, it might be that their response is not intentional. But either or way you will feel “being indebted” to someone.
Furthermore, taking money or giving loan, at the end it depends on how one perceives his relations. Not every one look at money the same way. To some, being asked for money is the same as being betrayed. It always takes relations to mistrust and destroyed the friendship.
Hence, I believe loaning between two people is always harmful. It is not good idea to borrow or lend money in relations. Until and unless there is understanding and bonding between two people.

Aristotle On Friendship
December 6, 1995
Friendship is undoubtedly one of the most important elements in the
books of Aristotle’s ethical principles. Aristotle takes the idea of friendship
to a serious degree. He categorizes them into three groups or types of
friendships. This report will attempt to define each type of friendship as well
as identify the role of friendship in a society.
Aristotle considers friendship to be a necessity to live. He claims
that no individual would chose to live without friends even if the individual
had all of the other good things in life. He also describes friendship as a
virtue and as just. Given the above statements on friendship, it is safe to say
that Aristotle felt that friendship is something that every human must have in
order to reach a peaceful state of mind. It has all of the qualities of good as
long as both parties of a friendship are considered good. Therefore, the role
of friendship in a society is to promote goodness between all parties involved
As previously mentioned, Aristotle has identified three different types
of friendships. The first is friendship based on utility. This is a friendship
in which both parties become involved with each other for their own personal
benefit. An example would be a working relationship with an individual. These
are people who do not spend much time together, possibly because they do not
like each other, and therefore feel no need to associate with one another unless
they are mutually useful. They take pleasure from each other’s company just for
their own sake. Aristotle uses the elderly and foreigners as examples of
friendships based on utility.
The second type of friendship is a friendship based on pleasure. This
friendship is made between two people that wish to gain pleasure from one
another. Aristotle uses the young as an example here. Friendship between the
young is grounded on pleasure because the lives of the young are regulated by
their feelings, and their main interest is in their own pleasure and the
opportunity of the moment. They are quick to create and destroy friendships
because their affection changes as fast as the things that please them do.
Aristotle felt that this sort of pleasure changes rapidly. The young also have
a tendency to fall in love, thus creating an erotic friendship which is swayed
by the feelings and based on pleasure.
Finally, we have what is considered the by Aristotle as the perfect
friendship. This is called the friendship based on goodness. This kind of
friendship is between those that desire the good of their friends for their
friend’s sake not their own. Each friend loves the other for what he is, not
for a particular quality. This type of friendship can last as long as the
friends remain good. The friendship just might last forever. Aristotle
considers it a permanent friendship because in it are all of the attributes that
friends ought to possess. This friendship differs than the others mentioned
because all the parties involved have each other’s qualities. There is no need
to use the other for pleasure or utility. They are in it for each other.
As you can see, Aristotle held friendship in high regard. He considered
it something to better the society as well as the individual. His definitions
of the types of friendships can make one relate to his or her own friends. One
can try to determine the type of friendships that one may have or wish to have
with his or her friends. It would certainly be a challenge in today’s day and
age to find a friendship based on goodness. Perhaps it can be achieved.

Henry David Thoreau wrote the essay entitled "On Friendship." Thoreau was one of America's greatest naturalists and wrote on that and other subjects in nineteenth century. He was one of the New England writers, along with Ralph Waldo Emerson and others, who subscribed to aspects of the philosophy of Transcendentalism.
Friendship: The entire essay is a consideration of friendship and its meanings, and yet from the first it is assumed that the reader will have some concept of friendship as a relationship between two people that extends beyond acquaintance and that involves nobility.
Love: An emotional relationship such that it can drive one to distraction when considering the object of that love, and Thoreau says this is not commonly found in friendship. Love that might apply is love that lets us stand in true relation to a friend.
Understood relation: Also not friendship, for an understood relation involves demands and expectations, which friendship does not.
Thoreau begins by musing on the meaning of Friendship as something we all seem to grasp intuitively but whose parameters and deeper meanings we have not considered.
His method is logical and analytical. He first considers some of the effects Friendship has on the thinking of individuals and then uses his own logic to trace those meanings back to the "thing" that caused them, to Friendship.
He asks what it is that is commonly honored with the name of Friendship. He considers the power of Friendship and the way it can heal ills in the world. He considers the nature of Friendship when compared to love. He considers the nature of people who are friends to one another. He examines the language of Friendship. He considers the demands of Friendship. in this way, Thoreau thinks analytically about each of the elements of Friendship, leading his argument to a conclusion.
The main point of Thoreau's argument is that Friendship exists and that its na.More on Thoreau's Essay on Friendship.

I would like to start by saying that I am an international student from Hong Kong studying in the United States, California. In the following essay I will attempt to uncover the nature of my relationship with my brother who is still in Hong Kong. The relationship changed from small fights we had back in Hong Kong to strong friendship we developed while being separated.
While I was growing and living in Hong Kong, the relationship between my brother and me was not truly well. We oftentimes would find ourselves getting into argument or even physical fights over minor problems and parental affection.
After moving to the USA in order to get a education, I understood that the relationship between us is getting better. We will often time chat on the phone, through email or regular letters. After all, I believe that our relationship improve due to the distance and amount of time we spend with each other. My brother had started to become a good friend of mine, something I did not have for many years.
Friends, like my brother, are other people with whom one has positive, friendly, and amiable relationships. Friends are the people we trust and prefer to spend time with as opposed to enemies who we do not trust and don’t like to be around.
Friends are the opposite from enemies and thus are about security, reliability and absence of threat. Since virtually every living creature of earth is searching for security and safety, friends are needed by everybody to sustain or create the sense of security and protection.
The modern day world requires each individual to build and maintain social connections and ties in order to progress the societal ladder and develop means for living. Without my brother, it would be almost impossible to succeed in life and get the needed amount of information required for proper individual development.
Friendship that developed between my and my brother is present not only in human world but also in animal world. One knows well that wolves and other canines oftentimes hunt in packs. Their friendship is seen in helping each other to catch the prey quickly and then eat it all together. These animals also teach the young how to hunt. Friendship is seen in many other species of animals and it appears that just like people animals prefer friendship to enmity, which once again supports the notion that friends are needed by every living creature on earth.
The relationship with my brother also provides me with a source of motivation and encouragement since family relationships are about supporting each other and helping each other get the most from their lives. I personally don’t have many friends who just like my brother I can call virtually at any time and ask for advice and can receive their calls or visits at any time and provide them with my support and advice.
This type of friendship I had developed with my brother is needed by everyone because it prepares individuals for normal interaction with other people in the society and future. Since every person expects to meet his/her significant other at some time in the future, friendship and friends certainly provide a pool of potential candidates or advisors on how to succeed with that significant other. For instance, I enjoy meeting the friends of my brother and I’m sure he likes the friends I make once in a while. As far as I know in order to become close, one has to trust another person and possess friendly attitude towards him. Friends serve you as examples of what friendliness and trust is, and thus allow you to know whether or not the other person can be trusted, relied upon or liked. Here I would like to use a quote from the film ‘ A River Runs Through It’ which I watched during the English lesson to describe my relationship with my brother. The quote is “you can love without complete understanding.” Indeed, I don’t know what had changed between me and my brother over the past year since I moved to California to get my education, yet it certainly had brought both of us closer to each other and opened a more trusting and friendly relationship which appeared just after we physically separated and I moved to the USA.
In conclusion, I would like to say that as an international student I understood the necessity of having good friends in my life. My brother who I did not like much and oftentimes would fight with while in Hong Kong changed after I left for the USA. By the same token I started to view him with more respect and understanding and consider him a very good friend of mine. The more I communicate with my brother the more I understand that friends teach us many things that we by ourselves would not have learnt. Brother lets me understand the meaning of communication and social interaction and is always there to help when I need help.

It is sometimes said that borrowing money from a friend can harm or damage the friendship. Do you agree? why or why not? Use reasons and specific example to explain your answer.
Many people have been always feared that they will loose their friends if they borrow money from their friends. In my point of view, I strongly believe that asking friends for financial help can not create negative impact on friendship. There appeared numerous reasons explaining for this phenomenon. My writing will deeply analyze main reasons.
To begin with, I firmly think that people need a lot of time to build faith in close relationship with their friends, so they are ready to help friends who are sometimes out of money as possible. Take me as an example, I have a good buddy who lent me amount of money to buy a book I liked when I was 10 years old. I shared my problem that I didn't raise enough money to get the book and needed his financial help. He was pleasant to allow to pay a part of the book's price for me without demanding me to give back immediately. Consequently, friendship between I and he has become closer.
The second reason I claim that borrowing money from a friend don't threaten friendship is that lenders actually know that someday, they may lack money and borrowers can be able to assist. This is because that each time people receive help from buddies when being in trouble of finance, they will always remember and respect it. Therefore, they will attempt to figure out ways to help their friends who supported them to surpass difficults in the past. Needless to say, this absolutely brings about positive benefits on enhancing relationship between friends
By the way of conclusion, based on the arguments explored above. I'm of opinion that in the most cases it is very beneficial for people to not only borrow, but also lend money from their friends because this creates undeniable benefits on developing friendship.

Hi Hoangle, thought your essay was pretty good. You have an effective structure, but it would be better to have a strong thesis statement that can stand on its own. Your examples were good and your ideas were clear, but you had quite a few grammatical errors and several sentences that were awkward and a bit unclear. Overall, I would rate this a 3.5 out of 5.
