Henchard made his way into the town of Casterbridge, penniless, depressed, and entirely ignorant of what he might do to sustain himself. He didn"t much care for himself now, knowing the deed he had done. It was out of season for hay-trussing, and he had not been able to find work at that task even when it was at the height of its demand. He was faced with finding another occupation.
But what can a man who has no skills other than hay trussing do? He walked down the main street of the town, stopping at every shop and inn to offer his services. As each establishment turned him away, quoting no need for general labor, especially from a migrant like him, something altogether strange happened in Henchard. Rather than becoming more depressed, he became more determined. He resolved that he would find work in this town, simply to spite the people who had turned him away. He also felt he owed it to himself to try and pick up the pieces of his shattered life in case Susan should ever find him again, despite the slim chance of that ever happening. Though he had his faults, Henchard was strong-minded when he decided to be.
At the next several doors, Henchard was very stubborn. When he would at first be refused, he would insist upon a chance to prove his worthiness by performing some task for the shopkeeper. Most simply refused, but at some places it got him in the door to speak as best he could on his own behalf. It was near the end of the street that one shopkeeper agreed to take on Henchard"s services, but only after he had insisted on delivering a package for the man to a customer across town. When he returned, the shopkeeper offered to pay him for his general labor, but at a rate that was far below anything necessary to subsist upon. Henchard, though disappointed, argued the value of his ability to work with a determination he had never known before. He argued long and hard, with smart and clever thought and speech, managing to gain many concessions from the man. He failed, however, to gain much overall in the way of salary from the shopkeeper in this negotiation, for the man simply had nothing more to give. He managed to negotiate a salary that would allow him to survive, but barely. It was as Henchard moved to shake on the deal when a patron of the shop spoke up.
"Wait," he said, "I can see you are worth much more than that to me. I am in need of one who can act as a salesman, and you have just proven your ability to sell yourself. Come to work for me." The man was a businessman of the highest repute in Casterbridge, and had no son to succeed him in his business. As he grew old, he had begun to look for one whom he could take under his wing, and Henchard"s determination and negotiating skill that had caught his eye.
So Henchard agreed, and the man taught him the ways of business, sending Henchard on the road to success.

How To Write a Research Prospectus

How to Write A Research Prospectus

Be certain your prospectus is accepted - save valuable time, money and effort by having Paper Masters write you exactly what you need.

A prospectus for a thesis for a graduate school program or a master's program is an important part of the entire post-graduate experience. Paper Masters will write your prospectus exactly according to your university specifications. Be certain your prospectus is accepted - save valuable time, money and effort by having Paper Masters write you exactly what you need.

In a Prospectus, you will devise a research plan that will explain your ideas in a structured format for your analysis – You will do everything except collect the data. Paper will develop into a finished “Prospectus for a Thesis”. Student is to refer to the APA Publication Manual for the mechanical details of a prospectus preparation.

Recommended Format for a Research Prospectus
Chapter 1 of the Prospectus:
  • Titled Chapter 1: INTRODUCTION
  • Background – What led you into doing this problem? Why are you interested in this problem?
  • Problem Statement – What is the problem of your study? You need to be very specific. When we talk about a “problem” in research, it does not necessarily mean that something is “wrong”. You can have a “problem” where you are trying to determine the attitudes and opinions of a response group.
  • Purpose of the Study – Why is your study important? What is the significance of your study?
  • Study Hypothesis(es) – An “educated guess” on the results of your study.
  • Begins on a new page following the Abstract.
  • Has an appropriate APA Level 1 heading to identify the chapter.
  • Has appropriate APA Level 2 headings to identify each part of the
introduction (see first item in this section for list of parts).
  • Follows APA guidelines for running head, page number, paragraph
indents, text alignment, and line spacing.
  • Follows APA guidelines for content and format of citations in text.
Chapter 2 of the Prospectus:

Titled “Chapter 2: REVIEW OF THE LITERATURE"

  • A literature review is where you review published material related to your problem.
  • Presents / cites research from scholarly or peer-reviewed sources only.
  • Identifies relations, contradictions, gaps, and inconsistencies in previous research presented.
  • Begins on a new page following the Introduction.
Chapter 3 of the Prospectus:

Titled "Chapter 3: METHODOLOGY"

  • In this chapter you will tell the reader very specifically HOW you are going to solve your problem that was stated in Chapter 1. You must give very detailed information in this chapter. For example describe your proposed sample. This must be a realistic sample-- how will you get names, addresses, etc. of your sample group. You cannot say you are going to survey people in Dallas. In other words, describe in detail the procedures and steps that will be used to gather the data.
  • The “ethical considerations” section of your prospectus, which is also included as a section in Chapter 3 of a prospectus, is where you demonstrate to the School and IRB Reviewers your conceptual understanding of research ethics as they apply to your proposed study. (Your applied knowledge of research ethics is examined in the safeguards built in to your study design, methods, and procedures!).
  • Describe the unique ethical considerations of conducting research in organizations, including using employees or workers as research participants, and the potential benefits and risks to the researcher of conducting research in your employers organization.
  • What are the potential risks to workers, or to the employee-researcher, and when might the potential benefits outweigh the risks sufficiently to justify conducting the study? What are the implications for providing informed consent, confidentiality, privacy, and anonymity?
  • Has a section that describes the survey.
  • Has a section that describes the study participants.
  • Has a section that describes the data collection process.
  • Begins on a new page following the Review of Related Literature.
Chapter 4 of the Prospectus:

Titled "Chapter 4: FINDINGS"

  • Since you will not be collecting data you will not have any findings. However, you will need to expand on your hypothesis/hypotheses and discuss possible findings.
Chapter 5 of the Prospectus:

Titled "Chapter 5: SUMMARY, CONCLUSIONS AND RECOMMENDATIONS"

  • In this chapter all you will need to do is the Summary. You must have data in order to do conclusions and recommendations. In the Summary you will need to state "what you are going to do"--your problem statement. Also, in this Chapter, you need to reiterate "how you are going to do it” -- Methodology.

REFERENCES – This section will contain a list of alphabetized “References” from your literature review. You must have “References” in APA format. You will need 6 or more references from peer reviewed journals.

APPENDIX – This section will contain a copy of your survey questionnaire.

Other Elements to the Prospectus
  • Includes title of paper, name of author, institutional affiliation, running head, and page number.
  • May include author note.
  • Follows APA guidelines for placement and formatting of each part.
  • Begins on a new page following the title page.
  • Lists the major parts of the study and the page number on which each part begins (Includes each component listed below in the order listed).
  • Follows APA guidelines for running head, page number, abstract heading, paragraph indent, text alignment, and line spacing.
  • Provides a brief summary of the study in an accurate, non-evaluative, concise manner.

Title: CHAPTER 2 What Is a Scientific Paper?

1
CHAPTER 2What Is a Scientific Paper?
  • Writing and PublishingInternational Journal Paper

2
DEFINITION
  • A scientific paper is a written and published
    report describing original research results.
  • Must be written in a certain way
  • Must be published in a certain way
  • Meet the test of valid publication
  • Published in a right place (a primary journal or
    other primary publication)

3
VALID PUBLICATION (1/2)
  • The definition of valid publication (primary
    publication)
  • By Council of Biology Editors (CBE), 1968
  • The first disclosure
  • Sufficient information
  • To assess observations
  • To repeat experiments
  • To evaluate intellectual processes
  • Susceptible to sensory perception

4
VALID PUBLICATION (2/2)
  • Must be essentially permanent
  • Available to the scientific community without
    restriction
  • Available for regular screening by one or more of
    the major recognized secondary services
  • e.g. Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts,
etc. in the United States and similar services
    in other countries

5
THE FIRST DISCLOSURE
  • Effective first disclosure is accomplished only
when the disclosure takes a form that allows the
peers of the author (either now or in the future)
to fully comprehend and use that which is
    disclosed.

6
SUSCEPTIBLE TO SENSORY PERCEPTION
  • Not just in terms of visual materials (printed
    journals, microfilm, microfiche)
  • But also in nonprint, nonvisual forms.
  • In the form of audio cassettes
  • Electronic journals

7
PRIOR PUBLICATION
  • American Society for Microbiololgy, Instructions
to authors, Journal of Bacteriology, January 1998
  • Is unacceptable for submission to an ASM journal
    on grounds of prior publication
  • Published in a conference report, symposium
    proceedings, or technical bulletin
  • Posted on a host computer to which there is
    access via the Internet
  • Made available through any other retrievable
source, including CD-ROM and other electronic
    forms

8
BASIC DEFINITION
  • Scientific papers are published in peer-reviewed
    publications
  • The entire community of science has long labored
with an inefficient, costly system of scientific
    communication precisely
  • because it (authors, editors, publishers) has
been unable or unwilling to define primary
    publication
  • Scientific paper is a particular kinds of
information in a prescribed (IMRAD) order

9
ORGANIZATION
  • Highly stylized, with distinctive and clearly
    evident component parts
  • The acronym IMRAD
  • Introduction
  • Methods (and Materials)
  • Results
  • And Discussion
  • The IMRAD system was prescribed as a standard by
the American National Standards Institute, first
in 1972 and again in 1979

10
IMRAD variation
  • A recent variation in IMRAD has been introduced
by Cell and several other journals
  • Methods appear last rather than second, and this
    variation was called IRDAM

11
EXCEPTIONS (1/3)
  • the IMRAD format is often the best choice
  • It is generally true for papers reporting
    laboratory studies
  • There are exceptions
  • Descriptive papers, from problem to solution
  • Reports of field studies
  • Clinical case reports

12
EXCEPTIONS (2/3)
  • Occasionally, the organization of even laboratory
    papers must be different
  • If a number of methods were used to achieve
    directly related results, thenExperimental.
    Materials Methods Results
  • Rarely, the results might be so complex or
provide such contrasts that immediate discussion
    seems necessarya combined section. Results
    Discussion

13
EXCEPTIONS (3/3)
  • Various types of organization are used in
    descriptive areas of science
  • How to organize?
  • Refer to the Instruction to Authors of your
    target journal
  • Obtain general information from appropriate
    source book
  • Medical papers Huth (1990)
  • Engineering papers Michaelson (1990)

14
ORGANIZATION
  • A scientific paper has less to do with literary
    skill than with organization
  • A scientific paper is not literature
  • The communication of research results is a more
    prosaic procedure
  • Grandiloquence has no place in scientific writing
    (Booth, 1981)
  • A system of reporting data that is uniform,
    concise, and readily understandable

15
OTHER DEFINITION
  • A scientific paper is the term for an original
    research report
  • Research reports that are not original, or are
not scientific, or somehow fail to qualify as
    scientific paper
  • Review paper
  • Conference report
  • Meeting abstract

16
REVIEW PAPER
  • The review paper is designed to summarize,
analyze, evaluate, or synthesize information that
has already been published (research reports in
    primary journals)
  • The spectre of dual publication does not normally
arise because the review nature of the work is
    usually obvious

17
CONFERENCE REPORT
  • A conference report is a paper published in a
book or journal as part of the proceedings of a
    symposium, national or international congress,
    workshop, roundtable, or the like
  • Conference presentation are often review papers
  • The recent work of particular scientists
  • The recent work in particular laboratories
  • Some of the material reported at some conferences
(especially the exciting ones) is in the form of
    preliminary reports

18
MEETING ABSTRACT
  • Meeting abstracts, like conference proceedings,
    are of several types
  • It was usually understood that the papers
presented at these meetings would later be
submitted for publication in primary journals
  • There has been a trend towards extended abstracts
    (or synoptics)
  • The extended abstract can supply virtually as
much information as a full paper all that it
    lacks is the experimental detail

    1. In a literature review, there should be a clear explanation of the area of research and details regarding the topic.
    2. In this part of the research, it’s best to be obvious about the goals and questions being addressed in the research thus understanding the topic more.
    3. A better insight of the subject matter is gained from including all factors in the topic after reviewing your work.
